What is IPRS ?

IPRS stands for Indian Performing Right Society.

It is a copyright society in India that represents music creators — including lyricists, composers, and music publishers. IPRS manages the rights and royalties of these creators by issuing licenses to users (TV channels, OTT platforms, radio, event organizers, YouTube, etc.) and collecting royalties when their music is publicly performed or broadcast.

Key Points about IPRS:

  • Who can join?
Songwriters (lyricists), music composers, and publishers (like music labels) can become members.

  • What does it do?

    • Grants licenses to users of music.

    • Collects royalties when music is used (live, broadcast, online).

    • Distributes royalties to the rightful owners — lyricists, composers, and publishers.

  • Why is it important?
If you are a lyricist, composer, or music label, being a member of IPRS ensures you get paid when your music is played on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, at weddings, concerts, clubs, etc.

  • Legal Standing:
IPRS is officially recognized under the Copyright Act, 1957 as a registered copyright society in India.
